An early champion, just recently Jennifer Lawrence stepped out in New York City wearing velvet slippers with a matching velvet housecoat from Colleen Allen and slinky black silk pants. Elsewhere in Los Angeles, Dakota Johnson paired hers with a leather trench and a classic white tee for a low-key outing.

But Lawrence and Johnson’s flats—both likely from The Row—aren’t the only velvet styles to choose from this season. There’s also Reformation’s low-heeled ballerina, or Khaite’s high vamp shoe in a rich burnt orange. There’s even a pair of pointed-toe flats in royal purple from Gianvito Rossi. For a more slipper-like look, Toteme’s velvet flats stay true to the classics, while mules from Dôen and Staud could easily double as your favorite indoor-outdoor shoes.

Photo: Backgrid The trend’s surge feels especially fitting with the holidays right around the corner, as velvet is a texture synonymous with the latter half of the year. Styling-wise, they’ll look chic with an LBD and sheer tights or a festive matching set. Truth be told, though, we love the “ everyday ” of it all—worn with your trusty 501s and a chunky sweater or tailored trousers and a great piece of fall outerwear.

Our favorite pairs, below, confirm why velvet really is fall’s chicest flat.
